Wise Words From a Wise Lady

From her book ‘There’s a Hole in My Sidewalk’.

Autobiography in five short chapters

By Portia Nelson

Chapter One

I walk down the street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I fall in.

I am lost . . . I am helpless.

It isn’t my fault . . .

It takes forever to find a

way out.

Chapter Two

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I pretend I don’t see it.

I fall in again.

I can’t believe I am in this same place.

But it isn’t my fault.

It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter Three

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I see it there.

I still fall . . . it’s a habit . . . but,

My eyes are open.

I know where I am.

It is my fault.

I get out immediately.

Chapter Four

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I walk around it.

Chapter Five

I walk down another street.

I personally love these words.

I love the truth in them. When I first read them, many years ago in my early twenties, I was amazed at how succinctly she summarised the choices we make in life. The responsibility we need to take for the choices we make. To realise that sometimes, we need to reassess and make a conscious decision to make alternative choices. We need to realise that we cannot control what happens

We need to realise that we cannot control what happens around us, or control the people around us but do have a say over our reaction and the everyday decisions we make.

Sometimes, we need to acknowledge our attraction to problems. Particularly when similar themes arise. When similar issues appear in your life, it’s important to dig deep within yourself to see what’s going on behind the particular situation.

There will be an emotional reason.
